Nothing brings me more pleasure in life than talking about my two favourite hobbies: Food & Running.  You see, when you get paid to develop recipes, play with food, and nosh for a living….time spent on foot is basically a prerequisite for what I do.

I fell in love with running over a decade ago.  I had just given birth to my second son, weighed over 200 lbs. and was sick and tired, of being sick and tired.  Instead of dieting, I set an athletic goal.  Everything I had done in the past did not work.  I “dieted” myself to weigh more than most men I knew?!? HA!  I had my son on Jan 31st, 2003.  My goal was to run the Ottawa Marathon in May of 2004.  Less than a week after I returned home from the hospital after having Colgan, I started running.  All 200 plus pounds of me.  It was NOT easy.  But I stuck with it. Every day a bit longer.  Ten minutes turned into tweleve, then fifteen, twenty…..and then a 5K…10K….

Instead of dieting,  I promised myself that I was going to fuel my body with the quality food it deserved, AND, get this: have my cake and eat it too.  I figured if I exercised, and ate properly 80% of the time, I could certainly enjoy all those things you think  you can’t have while trying to lose weight, 20% of the time.  Guess what? My theory worked! Just over a year after I had Colgan, I ran the Ottawa Marathon (26.2 miles/42K’s), and had lost and kept off over 50 lbs.  *To learn more about my weight loss story, watch my interview with Jeff Moore, host of Daytime York Region here.

I truly feel beyond blessed to have found balance in my life. Running not only allows me to fit into a rockin’ pair of denim, but more importantly, running makes me a better person.  If I’m having a shi&%y day, nothing makes the world better than 45 minutes on foot in my Mizuno’s.  I pride myself on living a healthy lifestyle, fueling my body with the quality foods it deserves, and enjoying burgers, pizza, ice-cream, cookies (*oh, boy I could go on and on….).  Life is far too short, not to enjoy what you love.  Have your cake, eat it too, and make time to sweat every-single-day.  My healthy lifestyle includes chocolate cake, or in this case Chili Chocolate Peanut Butter Popsicles.

Combining my two passions (running & eating) with an audience, and writing for Mizuno Run Blog and Running Room Magazine has been a dream come true.  The May/June issue of Running Room Magazine is filled with a ton of inspiration, running tips and recipes from yours truly.  This month I feature the most a-maz-ing frozen dessert from the Peanut Bureau, and, a sauce that will likely become your go-to summer condiment (and a great excuse to grow a herb garden to boot).  If you have any questions about running and/or fueling your body, please drop me a note.  I’d love to help any way I can!

Post Run Shakes

One of my favourite ways to refuel after a training run is with a post run shake.  Shakes are a quick way to refuel with quality nutrients your body needs post exercise.  My post run shakes always start with Almond Fresh Beverage (*my personal favourite is Almond Fresh Coconut Beverage). I use Almond Fresh Beverage for many applications in my daily meal prep: oatmeal, base for homemade pudding, in coffee/tea, a base for seafood chowders, and stews; and my boys love it straight up by the glass after a long day of learning, with a homemade cookie of course!  Here are two tasty post run/exercise shakes featuring my favourite Almond beverage.

For a quick on-the-go sip, place shake in a mason jar.

Apple-Maple-Rhubarb Post Run Shake

Sit back, relax, and refuel with a delicious post run shake.  For additional nutrients, add small handful of kale to blender.

1 1/4 cup (310 mL) Almond Fresh Vanilla Almond Beverage

1/2 cup (125 mL) chopped frozen rhubarb

1/2 small Empire apple, chopped and frozen

1 tbsp (15 mL) maple syrup (*or agave nectar, or liquid honey)

1 scoop (35 g) vanilla flavoured protein powder

1 tsp (5 mL) chia seeds

1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground cinnamon

hefty pinch ground ginger

Garnish: 1 tsp (5 mL) maple flakes (*found at Bulk Barn), optional

Place all ingredients in blender and pulse until desired consistency.  Pour into glass and garnish with maple flakes.  For more tasty post run shakes click here for my Mizuno Run Blog recipes.

A healthy twist on a coffee house inspired drink. Satisfy your sweet tooth, and refuel at the same time.

Coconut Mr. Moore Mocha Recovery Shake

A visit to Daytime York Region would not be complete without me developing a recipe for my favourite TV host, Jeff Moore.  This recipe has his name written all over it, literally.

The beauty of this recipe is: it satisfies your sweet tooth, and is loaded with good for you grub. Refuel after a warm weather run with a coffee house inspired post workout shake.

3/4 cup (175 mL) Almond Fresh Coconut Almond Beverage 

1/4 cup (60 mL) chilled brewed coffee (regular or decaf)

1/2 scoop (approx. 20 g) protein powder – chocolate or vanilla flavoured

1/2 banana, sliced and frozen

1 tbsp (15 mL) natural nut butter (peanut butter, almond butter or cashew butter)

2 tsp (10 mL) quality cocoa powder

1/2 tsp (2 mL) each; chia seeds and hemp seeds

Garnish: shredded toasted coconut, and very finely chopped 70% dark chocolate  *approx 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each

Place all ingredients in blender and pulse until desired consistency.  Pour into glass and garnish with toasted coconut and chocolate.  Click here for my Cherry Coconut Post Run Shake made with Almond Fresh Coconut Beverage.
